Telkwa is
known as the village Where the Rivers Meet.
Telkwa is also the place where fishermen, canoeists and
kayakers congregate in preparation for an outdoor
adventure in the Houston area.
The history of Telkwa dates back to the 1860s, with
the first arrival of construction teams to build the
Collins Overland Telegraph Line, stretching to the Far
North. Today, arriving in Telkwa is like stepping into
living history, as original pioneer homes and
businesses still exist, and continue to be used.
Population: 1,426
Location: Telkwa is located in North Central
British Columbia, 7 miles (11 km) south of Smithers on
the Yellowhead highway 16, halfway between Prince
George and Prince Rupert. |
 |
The
Museum, housed in the relocated 1920 school building,
offers a walking tour through the historic
sections of the Village, including Fairbairn's House
(1917), the original pioneer's General Store (1910),
two 1908 Log Houses, and the Grand Trunk Pacific
Railroad Bridge. |
 | A
special historic site in Telkwa is St. Stephen's
Anglican Church, built in 1910 from lumber
donated by Telkwa's first sawmill. The bell tower and
the lich gate, where a coffin is placed during the
initial part of a burial service, were added in 1921.

 |
Tyhee Lake Provincial Park provides good summer
swimming, hiking, boating, and camping, and in
winter, ice-fishing and cross-country skiing.
|
 |
Golf: Golfers can head north to Smithers for
great golfing. Nestled in the Bulkley Valley at the
base of Hudson Bay Mountain is Smithers Golf &
Country Club, an 18-hole par 72 golf course offering
challenging play on well groomed holes. The exciting
course is surrounded by a thick carpet of forest that
descends from Hudson Bay Mountain, with forested
fairways, a creek that comes into play on several
holes, and glacier views as far as the eye can see.

Celebrate the great wintery outdoors at the
Winterfest, with dogsled races, wagon rides,
snow sculptures, cross-country candlelight skiing,
and much more. |
 | Don't
miss the Telkwa Demolition Derby and BBQ
over the Labour Day weekend. A large beef goes onto
the pit to feed the crowds that come for the frog
races, the Demolition Derby, the tennis and the ball
tournaments. |
 | Winter
is a great time to visit nearby Smithers - Nordic
skiing on Hudson Bay Mountain offers endless miles of
tranquil trails just waiting to be discovered.
Ski Smithers Resort offers plenty of light, dry
powder for downhill skiing, snowboarding and
cross-country skiing. Ski and snowboard rentals are
available.

linking with the Stewart/Cassiar Highway and
Yellowhead Highway 16 in the south.
The Inside Passage Tour and
The Native Heritage Tour follow the same route,

Prince Rupert. Catch another ferry to the Queen
Charlotte Islands, or venture east on the Yellowhead
